The Houston Teachers Institute, until November 2009 a partnership between the Houston Independent School District and the University of Houston and a member of the League of Teachers Institutes, was dedicated to strengthening teachers and teaching in Houston's public schools. HTI offered seminars led by UH faculty for public school teachers on academic subjects teachers themselves request.

The Honors College at the University of Houston offered a Houston Teachers Institute program in 2009-2010 - the Honors College program was not recognized as following the Teachers Institute approach, nor was it a member of the League of Teachers Institutes. This program is apparently no longer funded.
