USING LITERATURE TO FORMULATE A THEORY OF EVIL GUIDE
Daniel Addis

Return

In this unit, students will formulate a theory of evil that includes defining evil, explaining the cause of evil, and enumerating proposals to reduce the incidence of evil. As members of small groups, the students will begin the investigation by extemporaneously formulating a theory of evil, which they will present to the class, which will analyze it and give the groups ideas for revision. The unit moves to a study of various philosophical and religious theories of evil, which will give the students more ideas for revising their theory. In the third phase, the students will read some works of literature that are about evil and use some of the philosophical and religious theories of evil and their own theories of evil to analyze them in discussion and essays. The fourth step is to research a nefarious event and, in a paper, analyze the event using some of the philosophical and religious theories and their own theories. The fifth step is to compose a story that illustrates their theory of evil. In the end, the students will revise their theory of evil a final time, and the whole class will put together a pamphlet containing their theories, stories, and research papers. Finally, the pamphlet will be downloaded onto the Internet on the school’s web page.
