

This curriculum unit is designed to be used in an English or Social Studies class, grades 6-12. The time span of this unit is planned for students who attend a school without walls with a limited enrollment period of two to four weeks. However, it can be tailored to fit any time frame desired. The unit will focus on the history of Houston’s black community in the Third Ward section of the city. This curriculum has six objectives: 1.) by helping students understand the history of Houston’s Third Ward, they will be able to better understand the concept of community, 2.) teach an awareness of the role a of community historian, 3.) to teach the importance of ones’ own history as it relates to a particular community, 4.) teach the events that have occurred in a particular community, 5.) to learn place geography through mapping activities, and 6.) to enhance writing skills.
