HOUSTON, WE HAVE A STORY GUIDE
Judith Riley

Return

This curriculum unit of study centers on discovery by the student -- self-discovery at first, and then a more general sense of exploration and discovery. This unit attempts to highlight and examine Houston from both a personal and a civic history. The students will explore more specific fields within the general history of this city, and will use tools of education that are helpful not just in this class, but in all disciplines. The student will also learn more about his or her family’s own personal history, and how their lives have shaped, or been shaped by, the city of Houston. In the components that I “field-tested” I saw excitement, creativity, and analysis on the part of the pupils. At the same time, I learned more too -- this unit allows both student and teacher to come to greater appreciation of each student’s ethnic family background and unique experience in the diverse city of Houston.
