This is an urban history unit focusing on the dreams and accomplishments of some of the individuals and organizations who have shaped the cultural, political, and economic history of Houston, Texas. It also familiarizes students with important urban history sites and current revitalization efforts. At the end of the unit, students will have produced a timeline of key events, a handbook including biographical sketches of important individuals and groups, and a tour guide highlighting important historical sites. Additionally, the last lesson allows students to look at their own community and propose a neighborhood redevelopment/ revitalization project. The unit is designed to be used in an English, Leadership, Vocational Construction, or Social Studies class, grades 10-12. The entire unit may be completed in a minimum of four weeks. If students are allowed to work on projects in class, it may take six weeks. The unit requires use of online resources and community involvement. Three field trips may be required. If these are not possible, speakers may be used to provide the information that may be obtained on these trips.
