The unit uses multicultural drama, within the context of Texas history, to help the student gain a greater appreciation of the diverse cultures that impact our state. Using the drama and collecting oral histories from selected family members, students will then begin to empathize about the impact their families have on them. Once the oral histories are collected, the students will convert the oral history into a first person narrative. This narrative will be used to create a play about their families. As an additional aid to create a deeper integration of the topic, a classroom quilt will be made with each student designing and sewing his or her own quilt square.
