EVELOPING MUTICULTURAL AND SELF AWARENESS THROUGH AMERICAN DRAMA GUIDE
Patti-Brown Milstead

Return

“Developing Multicultural and Self Awareness through America Drama” highlights three American plays. Each play is preceded by literature that will provide a frame of reference for understanding the play. Before reading the play Beautiful Senoritas students will read Sisters, excerpts from Walking Stars, and Prayer to the Goddesses. Before reading the play Two Trains Running, students will read Malcolm X by Any Means Necessary and afterwards excerpts from Makes Me Want to Holler. Before reading the play Paper Angels, students will read Dragonwings and excerpts from Island Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940. Throughout the unit students will work as a whole class, in small groups, and individually to annotate, write, dramatize, research and create to reach the ultimate goal of the unit. Through the dramatization of the plays students will be encouraged to “try on” other cultures for better understanding. Students will explore and examine other cultures to develop an understanding of themselves, specifically how they are defined. They will see how culture, society, age, and economics can work to create people’s definitions of themselves. This will lead to greater self-awareness as well as a greater sensitivity to cultures different form their own.
