IDENTIFYING AMERICAN CULTURE IN THE CLASSROOM USING MULTICULTURAL DRAMA GUIDE
Norina S. Olavere

Return

My curriculum unit deals with the issue of multiculturalism that will provide students with an overview of what it is so that they will be able to recognize and address how culture affects perception. The unit will carry four plays written by multicultural authors: Day of Absence, Douglas Turner Ward; Letters to a Revolutionary Student, Elizabeth Wong; Los Vendidos, Luis Valdes; and Beautiful Seņoritas, Dolores Prida. These plays will serve as a vehicle to present the diversity of culture, which is intertwined with several issues in the American society. My aim is that the overall impression of multiculturalism will be manifested in the course study. To support the plays, I have chosen several selections ranging from a short story to another play. I have decided to use The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, Marigolds by Eugenia Collier, Two Kinds by Amy Tan, Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros, and The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare as well as some Filipino Folklore supported by a poem by Jose Garcia Villa and an essay by Carlos Bulosan, who are both Filipino-American writers. There will be other selections that will be included which will be a part of the year-round lesson plans but all the selections mentioned are the ones that will be given much focus.
