SLAVERY IN MODERN SUDAN GUIDE
Merida P. LaBohne

Return

My curriculum unit topic deals with an issue that many are not aware of, slavery in the African country of Sudan. Teaching geography involves studying many countries that have very different climates and cultures. There is almost a set procedure for reviewing every region. This was an opportunity to make the people and culture of one particular country more real to the students and to give them a chance to create projects that are authentic and meaningful. Research will be a major part in studying this topic since it is not well documented. The use of the internet will play a major role in this curriculum allowing the class to become familiar with the computer and the many search engines available online. The unit will give opportunities for the class to become very familiar with that particular country. It will also afford them the opportunity to begin to understand the political reality of the world. They will find there are often no easy solutions for very difficult problems. It will be a chance for them to do critical thinking and to have voice an opinion based on the research. Finally, the students themselves will be able to take a proactive stance and form a plan how to be a force of change if they wish.
