HOUSTON: SPACES AND CONTRASTS GUIDE
Alicia Oria-Iriarte

Return

This multidisciplinary unit is designed to help students to become more aware of the singularities of the place they live in. It is intended to be used with children in kindergarten and primary grade levels. The architectural components of public and private spaces and its variations in different areas of the city of Houston are the foundation of this comparative study. Children learn best when they are active learners and interact with their own spaces. These interactions also facilitate a more comprehensive use of problem-solving strategies and decision-making processes. Young children can tremendously benefit from exposure to some basic and fundamental architectural knowledge. Through this unit I intend to provide my students with an understanding and appreciation for their city, Houston. We explore architecture in the environment, and use this learning in the areas of language arts, math, science, social studies, and art. Additionally, I want to expose my students to real-life situations that may allow them to have a better understanding of their environment. Some activities include "hands-on" experiences with construction materials; the creation of a "model city"; and the writing of a digital book comparing my students' neighborhood and Downtown Houston. Since most of my students are first-generation Americans, I believe that the activities included in this unit will help them to know more about their city and make them more proud of their Texan roots.
