TWO FACES OF SHAKESPEAREAN DRAMA: COMEDY AND TRAGEDY GUIDE
Norina S. Olavere

Return

This unit deals with a comparison between a Shakespearean comedy and tragedy. Two plays are points of comparison: As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet. It presents an alternative break away from tragedy, which involves violence besides love in its themes, taught in ninth grade. A comedy like As You Like It will hopefully inspire students positively more than a tragedy. Teachers and students will have an interactive learning by analyzing and understanding the beginnings of comedy and tragedy. A comparison of classic and standard comedy will ensue afterwards. The unit provides teachers to teach the two plays aforementioned through the use of inference and generalization; viewing and presentation; interpretation, comments, and anecdotes; building vocabulary; costume and hat design; and an enrichment activity with which students can get to experience rural life. A chance to know and understand William Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era is part of the unit as well. This part of the unit will not only concentrate on who William Shakespeare is, but learning will progress to his works as well. The Costume and Hat design activity is one of the highlights of the unit because students will be provided with an opportunity to develop their resourceful, initiative, and creative capabilities.
