HEALING WOUNDS THROUGH CHILDREN'S BOOKS GUIDE
Alicia Oria-Iriarte, Piney Point Elementary School

Return

This unit is intended to use children's literature as a healing tool in a kindergarten classroom. Children often face difficult situations or are exposed to developmental challenges that can be traumatic for them. A classroom can be a healing space where students feel secure and accepted. Children's books can help us in achieving this goal. Three different approaches are described: in the first one, books whose characters are children who belong to two different cultures will examine healing the wounds created by an immigration experience. Teaching at a school with a predominately Hispanic population, I believe this topic will help students discuss about some of those experiences. The second approach consists of storybooks that depict young female characters that face diverse obstacles but are able to overcome them with courage. I intend to use these stories to improve the self-esteem of some of my girl students. The last approach on healing through books uses art (painting and music) as other ways to help children deal with their fears and problems. Books used in this unit are briefly summarized and teaching strategies are provided with each of them. Lesson plans focus on these three different bibliotherapeutic approaches, and have been prepared for use in lower primary levels.
