WE'RE MORE ALIKE THAN WE ARE DIFFERENT: USING MULTICULTURAL CHILDREN'S LITERATURE TO DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE OF DIVERSITY GUIDE
Jomarga Thompkins, Lockhart Elementary School

Return

The purpose of this unit is to expose children to beliefs, lifestyles and cultural of people from various ethnic groups. This unit was created in the hopes that the words, "racial tolerance," would be replaced with the words "cultural acceptance." It is my intention that second grade students I work with who are predominantly African-Americans, are led on a journey outside of themselves and the world they feel comfortable and get to experience people and cultures which are totally different than what they're used to. It is my intention that the students not only see the differences that exist among the people from different racial backgrounds, but also their similarities. It is my hope that the students see that we're more alike than we are different. I plan to utilize a variety of medians that will serve as catalysts for developing awareness and broadening the minds of my students. I will utilize children's multi-cultural literature, food, music and art that show cases a particular ethnic group. The students will then have discussions and do activities that will assist them in making the connection between themselves and people from different ethnic groups. Although this unit is one month long and will be used predominantly with a social studies curriculum, it can easily be expanded and used with other subjects from the second grade curriculum.
