YOU CAN GET THERE FROM HERE: AN INTRODUCTION TO WORLD TRAVEL FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS GUIDE
Cheryle L. Boyd-Julien, Carrillo Elementary School

Return

This unit is a multicultural inter-disciplinary study of travel for elementary students. It addresses the need for looking beyond the familiar for the sake of learning. Students will receive a lot of information regarding world geography, modes of travel, weather patterns, and governmental structures during the course of study. This is the more technical art of the unit and merits study. However, there are many more elements which constitute successful completion of the unit. In addition, they will develop self-confidence in their own cultures. By the close of the unit, each student should know that one is not diminished by learning from or respecting another. This unit was designed to spark interest and develop a lifelong respect for others and their own cultures. During this journey, students will explore cultural differences as well as similarities. There is great effort made during the course of study to pose probing questions that require the application of newly learned concepts. At the same time, students are encouraged to do additional study if they do not have the answers.
