ACTION AND REACTION: AN ELEMENTARY EXPLORATION OF MATTER AND ETHICS GUIDE
Mondrea D. Mitchell, Twain Elementary School

Return

This unit is an interdisciplinary study of matter, measurement, and responsibility. It is based on philosophies and strategies to assist the interdisciplinary teacher in providing character- and inquiry-based education within an action-oriented environment. Asking children to explore the actions and reactions within their environment, it takes two paths of inquiry. The first is an exploration of matter and measurement. It supports inquiry into what matter is and how it behaves. The children inquire into chemical and physical changes within our environment and what causes them. It also explores the observable, measurable properties of matter, and teaches children the importance of reliable measurement. In addition, opportunities are provided to practice the skills of measuring one-, two-, and three-dimensional materials, including liquids. The second path of inquiry is concerned with the social environment, and how our actions and reactions determine how we live within a community. It explores the concepts of community building and fair scientific testing. This includes observation, inferring, predicting, measuring, controlling and manipulating variables, and identifying the response of a scientific test. Since the unit inquiry is founded in communication, children are challenged to read, write, listen, and speak in purposeful contexts that build confidence and emotive learning.
