ENERGY: EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE FORMS GUIDE
Billie Gayle Young, McDade Elementary School

Return

The purpose of my unit is to help students understand how different sources of energy are being used. There are many ways to define energy, but what is it? How is it used? Why is it so important? They will become aware of how different energy sources contribute to the generation of electricity and heat. I want to show students how the demand on foreign oil is affecting today’s energy sources. Students will see how necessary it is to work toward generating interest in alternative forms of energy. The unit will give students ideas on what can and cannot work in specific areas. The students will also see how some areas in the world have generated the use of alternative energy sources and what the impact has been for those places. I want them to see that they too can make a difference. I have planned to introduce my students to the various forms of alternative energy sources through many hands-on activities. I want to generate interest in building a solar-powered vehicle, which I hope to have for the Science Fair. We will work with creating an electrical current in the same way a turbine is used to generate electricity. We will build solar collectors and test them to see which design heats water most effectively. This will be a very inquiry-based unit.
