THE BLUES OF SEVEN GUITARS GUIDE
Daniel Addis, Yates High School

Return

“The Blues of Seven Guitars” covers the August Wilson play, Seven Guitars, a play that will enrapture teenage students. Wilson writes poetically and his characters, as one of my students has said, “sound just like us.” The play is about seven African Americans living in the late 1940s in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. All of the characters have prominent roles, but the play focuses especially on Floyd, a guitarist and singer who dreams of becoming a big recording star. The play’s central theme is racial oppression – how it affects people’s attitudes and behavior and how it transforms victims into destroyers of their own people. This unit summarizes the life of August Wilson (a drama in itself) and the play. It analyzes each of the characters and brings out their struggles, joys, and dreams, and analyzes their metaphorical aspects. The play contains many metaphors, symbols, and historical references, each of which is explained in this unit. Finally, the unit explains composition and literature analysis activities. I explain how I lead students to unpack Seven Guitars and the writing process my students use when they write critical analysis papers. Seven Guitars has captivated my students and these activities have enriched and stimulated them.
