This curriculum unit teaches third-grade, immigrant, bilingual students to take pride in themselves, their families, and their history. By studying immigration to Houston, the biographies of immigrants, and their own immigration experiences, as well as learning what facilities and resources are available to them as immigrants in Houston, and by learning about other groups, they take responsibility for their own success or failure. They will understand that with hard work they are able to change their surroundings. The unit mainly relies on the children’s observations, research, and life experiences as immigrants in Houston. The objective of the unit is to motivate the teacher as well as the student. Houston needs educated people, including all immigrants, tolerant of and cooperative with one another. Two methods of teaching, Operative Groups and Gestalt theory, are used to enable the teacher to create an environment of cooperation and facilitate the students to gain an appreciation of the “here and now.”
