IN SEARCH OF ETHNIC IDENTITY IN SELECTED NARRATIVES: NEW READING, NEW MEANING GUIDE
Maria Theresa S. Javellana, Hamilton Middle School

Return

This unit was devised for a sixth-grade language arts or reading class and has two main goals. The first objective is the study of various cultures through the reading of personal narratives chronicling the experiences of members of different ethnic groups. By reading these personal accounts, students and teacher alike will be forced to rethink their preconceived notions of other cultures and ethnic groups. A second goal is that by reading these literary works, students will see the value of their own ethnic and cultural heritages. In addition to reading, listening, and speaking, students will keep daily journals and will have a chance to share their reflections as a group. By the end of this unit, students will have a newfound respect for others and themselves.
