This early elementary social studies curriculum unit gives Hispanic kindergarten students the ability to learn about their own family histories and cultures and develop an understanding of the diverse Asian groups that also inhabit Houston. Student populations in Houston Independent School District (HISD) are becoming increasingly stratified and segregated along ethnic and linguistic lines. This curriculum unit provides students with opportunities to discover what lies beyond their own backyards and neighborhoods. Students begin by creating a photograph autobiography. The photographs will reflect three specific themes: family history, aspects of ethnicity, and significant individual differences. Students will then compare and contrast their own cultures, immigrant experiences, and neighborhoods with students of Chinese and Vietnamese descents. By exploring specific Asian cultures through hands-on projects and multicultural literacy, students will discover that although differences are more often recognizable, the commonalities are across cultural barriers.
