This unit is intended for advanced foreign language students at the 8th grade level. Covering a whole semester, it presents in-depth studies of three different paintings, from different centuries, societies, and genders: Self- portrait as the allegory of Painting (1630- 32) by Artemisia Gentileschi, Payés catalán al claro de luna (1968) by Joan Miró, and Composition with red, yellow and blue (1921) by Piet Mondrian. In each case the lesson plans cover four basic topics: 1) the background of the artistic movement; 2) the life of the artist; 3) the content analysis of the painting (considering its a) tone, b) descriptive or denotative level; c) semantic or connotative level and d) allegoric or subjective level); and 4) the foreign language implementation of the vocabulary for each painting. Students' outcomes, or products resulting from these lesson plans, will range from cultural newspapers or artistic gazettes and timeline-based graffiti murals, to painters' diaries and paintings based upon students' own content analyses interpretations.
