RENASCENT AFRICA: TEACHING FRENCH-AFRICAN ART, LITERATURE AND SOCIETY GUIDE
Marco Campos, Jack Yates High School

Return

The goal of this unit is to create a culture-centered linguistic curriculum that addresses the 5 C’s of second language instruction. The unit is designed to be spread over a 2 six weeks grading period since several communicative goals are addressed. Students will learn about the Negritude literary and artistic movement that coincided with the African independence movement in the 1950’s and 60’s. The unit focuses primarily on the works of Leopold Sedar Senghor and Aimée Césaire, two French writers, and the African art philosophy of Janheinz Jahn. However, the unit mentions ways in which the curriculum can be adopted for other courses such as Spanish or English literature. Through close examination of poetry and visual arts such as masks and paintings, students will be encouraged to develop a more in-depth understanding of African culture and gain an appreciation of various forms of art. At the same time, they will be immersed in the French language and provided a cultural context in which to relate.
