The goal of this unit is to help students examine the influence that Hip-Hop has on society. It begins with a history lesson on the origins of Hip-Hop, then it defines the elements that characterize the culture (rap music, graffiti art, break dancing, and fashion are the major elements). The lessons are interactive and were designed to focus on the more positive aspects of the Hip-Hop culture; however, discussions about inappropriate language, offensive behaviors, and the issue of misogyny have been incorporated. Finally, this unit takes a topic of interest to the students and turns in into an opportunity to teach history, the arts, writing, listening, critical thinking and analysis.
