The purpose of my unit of study, “What’s the Big Idea? Exploring Art, Artists, and Society in Book Clubs,” is to get students to delve into and discuss issues of art/artists and society within a book club. This unit of study includes lessons on creating, managing and assessing student book clubs as well as on finding issues in the texts that students are reading and encouraging them to carry on literate discussions about texts. I have selected almost 10 titles that address issues of art or the artist and society and included brief descriptions and age levels for each book. Since the class will be working in book clubs, and the success of the class depends on the success of the clubs, I discuss at length the process of placing students in book clubs, and then fostering their growth as readers by providing them conversation prompts to guide and grow talk in the groups. This unit also details how to teach students to create meaningful artifacts (bookmarks, Post-It notes, etc.) and at least one rubric to guide their work. This unit is very different from the other units discussed in my seminar, as mine is the only unit discussed that takes a literary approach to the topic.
