EARTHQUAKES: A PHENOMENAL FORCE GUIDE
Nicole L. Betts, Henderson Elementary School

Return

Did you know that everyday there are at least a thousand small earthquakes on our planet? Or did you know that most earthquake injuries are not caused by the quake themselves. These injures are normally caused by objects in and on buildings that have fallen or dislodged due to the ground shaking. Many people find the topic of earthquakes to be very fascinating and phenomenal. The causes and effects of an earthquake can also be quit astronomical. The aftereffects and financial damages can be devastating once a severe earthquake has occurred. In this two week unit my students and I will not only explore the aftereffects of earthquakes, we will also discuss: (1) What causes earthquakes (2) What other effects on people, land, and the environments they may have (3) How earthquakes can be detected or prevented and most importantly (4) Each of my students will walk away from this unit being able to define what an earthquake is and knowing how to keep themselves safe in the event they experience one. Each lesson has been created on the same conceptual framework as the 5E’s scientific instructional method and model. This instructional model encourages both teachers and students to actively engage themselves in the scientific process while exploring and evaluating learning outcomes and activities.
