FLOODING IN HOUSTON: LEARNING FROM THE PAST AND PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE GUIDE
Calvin Rains, Foerster Elementary School

Return

In this extensive interdisciplinary unit, third-fifth grade students in a school science and technology club will explore flooding in Houston. Unit objectives address several Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, technology, and health. Students will learn about how and why they should attempt to prepare for the inevitable floods that will occur in our community. Although we cannot control floods, we can help be better prepared to face their consequences. By learning from the past, the students will investigate the causes of flooding and about how our community is attempting to plan for the future by examining flooding from a historical perspective. This unit also enables students to utilize a wide array of Internet resources as well as printed materials to obtain information that they will apply to problem-solving situations.
