IMPROVING AND UNDERSTANDING OUR EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH: THE HISPANIC POINT OF VIEW GUIDE
Claudia M. Hughes, Pugh Elementary School

Return

This curriculum unit teaches third grade, bilingual students and their parents to take responsibility for their health by learning how our body works and what it needs to keep us healthy. This unit strives also to encourage students and their families to live a better life physically and emotionally. The unit expects also to motivate teachers to create a healthy environment within their classrooms by developing awareness in the students and families about healthy habits like exercise, eating healthy, and learning relaxation with smells, meditation, and music. They will understand that with hard work they are able to learn about themselves and change habits to live a healthier life. The unit mainly depends on the children’s research and experiences. The objective of the unit is to motivate the teacher as well as the student. This unit considers the initiative of Houston’s mayor Bill White, “Keep Moving Houston,” to “get Houston off the Fattest Cities List.” One technique of teaching is included, Celestine Freinet’s ”Education Through Work.” This technique will enhance the teacher’s skills for research and help the students to “learn how to learn” to be responsible for their own learning in a very important area: emotional and physical health.
