ANCIENT MEXICO: A TREASURE TO FIND AND EXPLORE GUIDE
Milagros Henríquez, Gallegos Elementary School

Return

I am a Puerto Rican teacher who came to Houston, Texas nine years ago to make a home for my family. During all these years, I have worked with bilingual students who are, in their majority, from Mexican families. Connecting to my students and their reality to make the learning experience meaningful for them was the reason that made me participate from the experience of writing this unit. I wanted to have the opportunity to create something special that provided me with activities to connect with my children’s culture and to support a multicultural environment. This unit has the purpose of teaching children about their Mexican heritage through the study of literature created by the Mixtec in Pre Columbian times. The unit has The Codex Nuttall, an ancient manuscript written by the Mixtecs, as the focus of the activities. Through the study of this epic that portraits Lord Eight Deer’s life and conquests, the students will learn about Mixtec writing learning to decode and write their own stories using the basic symbols, they will analyze the story line to develop their reading skills, they will develop their writing skills working on their own stories and presented it in symbols and in written form, all in their native language. The activities will be reinforced and extended in English as needed and the students will express their ideas according to their language level.
