CREATING AN IDENTITY FOR HOUSTON GUIDE
Kathryn Janes, Long Middle School

Return

This curriculum unit is designed to be used in seventh grade Texas history classes that include second language learners just recently out of ESL classes as well as gifted and Pre-AP students, many of whom are also second language learners. The theme of my curriculum unit is an examination of the various elements that make up the city of Houston. We will examine Houston's history and look at how the city's image has evolved over the years. We will also consider how geographic location and economic considerations have shaped the development of Houston. The narrative provides historical background information about the city of Houston and about Houston's various image campaigns over the years, as well as information about my planned teaching strategies. The lessons involve the use of computers (both for research and to create projects), photographs, newspaper articles, and primary source documents. Several lessons will involve group work. For a final project the students will prepare a brochure, a poster, a PhotoStory presentation or a webpage that creates an identity for Houston and markets it to the public. My hope is that these activities will excite my students' interest in this subject at the same time that it is encouraging them to use their critical thinking skills.
