INVISIBLE HOUSTON: RECORDING ORAL HISTORIES WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS GUIDE
James T. Sheridan, KIPP 3D Academy Middle School

Return

In my HTI Unit, "Invisible Houston: Recording Oral Histories with Middle School Students," the students will access information about their community with the goal of learning more about Houston and the rich history contained therein. Students will analyze the boundaries of neighborhoods, the wards, and where different groups of people settled or were allowed to settle. Through examination of photographs, articles, and web research, the students will then use this information to inform their Oral History Project. Each student will interview a person from their family, a neighbor, or a community member in order to create a narrative essay that incorporates the history of Houston, quotations from that person, and other observations made by the student. Questions of identity, differences among communities, conflicts, and the role of education in Houston neighborhoods will be examined. The goal is that this unit will lead to a finished product that can be presented in a public forum for fellow students, community members, and local media. Students will improve researching and writing skills, and more importantly, they will connect the home life and the school life in a meaningful way.
