This unit deals with the general topic of migration. It starts by giving a broad perspective of migration, taking the subject from a general view to the specific case of the United Sates and the city of Houston in particular. The essay also includes an analysis of two countries that are homeland to most of the immigrants in Houston: Mexico and El Salvador. This analysis intends to find the reasons why Mexicans and Salvadorans are drawn to the United States.
In the course of these lessons, 3rd grade students will better understand how Houston is a city of immigrants and what positive outcomes result from that. Through photography, they will have the opportunity to view and experience different cultural traits from the various countries that are represented in Houston. They will also have the chance to appreciate musical diversity by listening to music from different countries, as well as some musical choices made by their classmates. In addition, the students will be exposed to a tangible cultural difference -the handwriting of the different regions of the world. The study of the topic of prejudice is of utmost importance in the unit, given that in the near future the students will be faced with a multicultural society like the one in Houston.
